Marvel Films vs DC Films

Ok, so I was reading an article on IGN and it kind of pissed me off. It was letting users vote on different aspects of Marvel vs DC. I wasn’t really angered until I got to the movie subsection. the choice of films they used for DC was awful, and it was just a terrible representation of what has been created. So I was explaining my anger to Chris when this happened.

Chris 22:15
Well, I can do a thumbs up thumbs down review real fast.

Andrew 22:15

For anyone wondering, if you take out the Image Comics films and are wanting to strictly look at the superhero universes of these two companies, we would have had 17 ups and 15 downs for an approval rating of 53% for DC. I also found it kind of interesting that, with the exception of our liking Watchmen and Andrew liking Green Lantern, our DC ups in the superhero categories are strictly for the Superman and Batman franchises, while Marvel had a bit more of a diverse list of heroes that we liked. Take with that what you will, and let the arguments begin.

  2. I agree whole heartedly. Outside of the animated films by DC (Which are top notch), the franchise is a two man show. You have Batman and Superman who are arguably the two most influential superheroes in all of comics, and their films have enjoyed for the most part excellent directors and great writing (say for Batman and Robin…wow)

Marvel films are best compared to a big bowl of Jelly Belly jelly beans. There is such a huge variety of flavors, but honestly, who gives a crap about Black Licorice flavored beans (hence Ghost Rider, Elektra, any attempt of Fantastic Four). I prefer the variety, but there are many of the beans which I just leave in the bowl and act like they never existed. And now with Disney owning Marvel’s film rights, there might have to be more sifting to find anything worth watching because they are a formulaic movie company with their sequels. Unfortunately, film audiences are tired of the cookie cutter sequels. They would much rather wait for their Redbox dvds, Netflix it once while fast forwarding all romantic sequences, or they might just go to good ole bootlegged internet.

See Caleb, whereas you compare Marvel films to Jelly Bellys, I would prefer a slightly different analogy. Marvel films are like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Beans. I make this distinction because, while I might not enjoy black licorice or juicy pear, I will still consume it all the other flavors are gone. For this reason, I’d say DC is like Jelly Bellys, because while they might not taste the best, I still enjoy having them there (you know how much I love watching Batman and Robin, Steel, etc. just to make fun of them…the so bad it’s good argument).
However, with a Bertie Bott’s Bean, we have a highly different array of flavors, some of which are completely inedible. For every Filet Mignon flavored bean (X2, which I consider the best of the Marvel-verse), alas, there will be an earwax (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer). You clearly had the potential for a great flavor with every bite, but there are just too many times that I walk away with a horrible after taste in my mouth (the so bad, it makes me want to murder a puppy argument).
